BRA Hosts Global Tax Meeting

The Barbados Revenue Authority is the host for the 11th Global Forum Competent Authorities Meeting at the Hilton Barbados from May 6 to 7, 2024. The two-day event brings together over 175 delegates from 64 countries worldwide, underscoring the importance of the Global Forum's role in shaping global tax policies.

Over the two days, the sessions will provide updates on exchange of information (EOI) standards and the role of Competent Authorities. There will also be discussions around cross-border assistance in tax collection and tackling barriers to EOI.

Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Ryan Straughn, in his opening remarks, highlighted Barbados' commitment to international tax cooperation and its role in fostering a fairer and more transparent global tax environment.

Revenue Commissioner, Louisa Lewis-Ward welcomed delegates to the island and urged them to learn from each other’s experiences. She also encouraged small island developing states (SIDS) to remain actively engaged in the Global Forum as a means of influencing and shaping international tax rules.

“It is important for countries like ours to be engaged and participate in meetings such as these, as we bring our unique perspectives and challenges to the fore,” she explained. “Active engagement in Global Forum events, provides a platform to voice our specific concerns and priorities regarding tax transparency and exchange of information. It empowers SIDS to participate in influencing and shaping international tax rules, gain valuable knowledge, and secure international cooperation.”

The Global Forum, a key initiative of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is a vital platform for tax authorities worldwide to share best practices and experiences in exchanging information for tax purposes. This collaborative effort helps to combat tax avoidance and evasion, ensuring a fairer and more transparent global tax system.
